100 Word Rant: Localization

As a fan of Japanese games and shows, a big pet peeve of mine is pointless localization changes. While sometimes changing a joke or rewording a sentence is necessary for clarity, there are far too many unusual and ridiculous changes. A particularly bizarre example is the 4Kids localization of Pokemon, which changed rice balls in the original script to be jelly donuts in the localized version, as if children couldn’t understand the show if the characters ate Japanese cuisine. That change may be obnoxious, but some changes actually affect the story or characters, which is where I draw the line.
