Mysteries of the Deep

The ocean floor is know to be one of the least explored places but  is that true?

According to Jon Copley of iflscience.com “we do actually have a map of 100% of the ocean floor to a resolution of 5km.”

5km isn’t very much but it does allow us to see the main features of the landscape but it doesn’t show us the fish and the different animals. Many animals live in the depths unreachable by man while some have been discovered there could still be hundreds if not thousands undiscovered.

In 2007, a Frilled Shark was found in Japan, this creature usually lives in depths up to 5,000 feet according to National Geographic. The Frilled Shark was discovered in 1884. The most recent breed, the Southeren African Frill Shark, was found in 2009. The frilled shark is also the closest relative to the sharks that roamed during prehistoric times.(pictured below)

The estimated largest arthropod on earth just happens to be a crab. The giant Spider Crab lives on the ocean floor up too a thousand feet deep and can measure up to twelve feet from claw tip to claw tip.(pictured below)

Confirmed in 2009 the Barreleye is a deep sea fish that intrigues scientists with its transparent head. The Barreleye lives in waters up to 2,600 feet while its not very deep it is a very spooky creature. (pictured below)

All in all we know very little about what dwells in the deep. The few creatures we do know about tend to leave scientist baffled and excited to see what we can find next.
