Unidentified Tribe Comes Forth

The Amazon rainforest covers about 2.1 million square miles in South America. Numerous tribes of people that have yet to reveal themselves to the outside world reside there. If the tribes do make contact its usually because of extreme circumstances.

Around July 7th, Brazilian officials reported that a tribe of people who previously had no contact with the outside world came forth. They came upon a settled tribe called the Ashaninka while being run out of there territory by illegal loggers. It took a few weeks for contact to be made between the tribes but they have been peaceful since then.  Brazil’s indigenous affairs department has released a video clip of positive interactions between the two tribes. The video shows that many that are making contact are young. These making contact said they were young because “The majority of the old people were massacred by non-Indians in Peru, who shot at them with firearms and set fire to the houses of the uncontacted.”

The main concern of officials is that the influenza will spread through out the tribe. Since they reveled themselves many have contacted influenza with seven cases being treated. However the seven being treated ran off before treatment was complete. Officials have sent doctors in search of the tribe in attempts to help them but no further news has been released on their status.
