Groundhog Day 2015

Groundhog Day 2015

Groundhog Day is a day celebrated on the 2nd February of each year. The celebration originated in Pennsylvania during the 18th century. During the celebration people gather around to watch a Groundhog crawl out of its homely hole for a quick peek. If during this, the badger sees his shadow, it is believed that there will be six more weeks of winter. If Phil does not see his shadow, it is an indication that spring will be making an early appearance. The first record known of the tradition was in 1887 in which “Phil” the ground hog saw his shadow indicating six more weeks of winter.

So as tradition, each year people gather around their Televisions, computers, radios, and phones to listen in on what Phil does, or doesn’t see. For some, Groundhog day is quite exciting and to make make things more interesting, people even make bets on what they believe the critter will see.

This year, the famous Punxsutawney Phil has reportedly seen his shadow despite overcast skies. Revealing 6 more cold weeks of winter. According to washingtonpost.com, Since the groundhog’s first prediction in 1887, Phil has seen his shadow 102 times (including this year) and not seen it on just 17 occasions. Making the Groundhog not seeing his shadow rare.

Keep warm for the next few weeks. Remember, spring will be arriving in no time.
