How Sunlight affects your Mood

HealthCorps Sunlight

Has anyone else noticed a change in their mood on sunny days??? Every time the sun is shining in the morning, I can automatically tell my mood is better. Why is this?

When sunlight, or bright light, passes through your eyes, your brain is told to produce serotonin – the neurotransmitter (a chemical that transmits a signal) that gives you a sense of well-being. It’s like a natural anti-depressant! Matter of fact, it can be used to treat depression and “the winter blues” (also known as SAD – seasonal affective disorder) and works faster than medication.

So how much sunlight do you need each day? Try to be outside 30 minutes a day. It is getting easier and easier to do this with the weather we’ve been having! Take a walk…you’ll be working on your mood AND your exercise=) Let light get to your eyes by not wearing sunglasses…just don’t look directly at the sun!

Maybe that’s the problem with those Northern folks…;)
