Iphones are Bad News for Modern Day Parents

Children are the future of our world but what happens when we don’t give them the love they need.

Kids are taught at a young age to entertain themselves but with the technology of today they don’t have to as they get older. Parents now give their kids an iPhone anytime they start crying; heaven forbid they entertain the child themselves. Children are now losing important communication skills by only interacting with their parents phones. Kids playing on their parents iPhones lose many important skills which will hurt them once they are older.

Kids learn by watching, communication skills are one of the most important things they learn. When you sit and text in front of them they begin to believe that’s how you should communicate.

“For a child, being face-to-face with you adds a special quality to the interaction. It brings you closer to her, physically and emotionally, and makes her feel that you’re really with her” (Weitzman & Greenberg, p.75).

The feeling of true interaction and being together with other people is something that needs to be encouraged in today’s youth. Many older kids are completely obsessed with social media and being on their phones. Now that parents are becoming glued to them as well, the younger kids will begin to pick up on this habit sooner in life.

“Kids often use social media to experiment with their political, cultural, ethnic or sexual identity and this can have a positive effect on those not able to fully express themselves in person or with their peers.” (Martine Oglethorpe, “The positive role of technology: why parents should embrace the online world”)

While these positives are true you also have to look at the negatives. If kids are using social media to inquire these social aspects of life, then sometimes it can mean that they aren’t comfortable enough to discuss them with their families. As kids grow up they have to learn to communicate with their parents and if you are constantly on your phone, they won’t feel comfortable enough to do that.

All in all technology has given many great devices, but they don’t always have the best effects on us. Communication skills are important for everyone but when a child sees you on your phone they lose the want to verbally communicate with you. With the IPhone your ability to teach your kids about communication falters.
